The new Commissioner of Police for Gauteng is Tommy Mthombeni.

Fanie Masemola, the Commissioner of National Police, made the announcement.

The appointment of Mthombeni follows Elias Mawela’s retirement in January.

He promises to pick up where his predecessor left off.

Additionally, he described some of the initiatives he will spearhead to combat crime in the province.

“This will support our initiatives to increase police presence in our neighborhoods with the goal of preventing, combating, and looking into crimes, as well as eventually bringing offenders to justice,” Masemola stated.

Following Lt-Gen Elias Mawela’s retirement in February, Mthombeni assumed the role of acting Gauteng commissioner.

According to Masemola, Mthombeni has been in charge of visible policing since 2020 in his capacity as deputy provincial commissioner.

With 37 years of service, Mthombeni has occupied a number of high-level roles, such as district commissioner and cluster commander in Tshwane, as well as station commander at the Jabulani police station in Soweto and the Pretoria Central police station.
